The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... Currently.

Vince Gilligan did not foresee that Pluribus would emerge as a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the acclaimed program reaching its finale—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.

Regarding the Tremendous Fan Response

Anyone might to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and fan theories regarding Pluribus. The creator is striving to ignore the noise.

“It's like being constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it from others, and that's intentional. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”

In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by audience chatter.”

“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.

The Central Mystery: Will Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Considering the writers are not listening by public opinion, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… in a way.

“There are some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Alternatively, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.

“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”

Then again, one could always use the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
