The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive experience where a girl containing several personalities within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct personas, each with unique fears and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, while additional clips show the main character exploring a desolate church.

A World of Personal Horror

"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."

The central gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl one after another. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers where their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
